Tips for guided reading with your child

Strategies if they get stuck on a tricky word:

• Ask your child to sound it out.

• Skip the word and read on to the next sentence. Go back and see if you can work it out.

• Say the first letter sound straight away.

• Look at the picture to see if it will give you clues.

Follow up activities after you have read:

• Ask your child to retell the story.

• Find any compound words in the story.

• Find any rhyming words.

• Ask questions about the book to check for understanding.
