Paparoa Range School is a unique rural full primary school located on the West Coast of Te Waipounamu, providing education for students from Years 1 to 8 across our Blackball and Dobson campuses. Our school community is proud of its strong sense of connection, inclusiveness, and commitment to ensuring every child is known, valued, and supported to succeed.
At Paparoa Range School, relationships sit at the heart of everything we do. We believe that students learn best when they feel safe, connected, and empowered, and we work hard to create environments where children can thrive both academically and personally. As a small school, we value the opportunities we have to know our learners and whānau well, allowing us to respond to individual strengths, needs, and interests in meaningful ways.
In 2025, our school undertook a refresh of our school values. This process involved students, staff, whānau, and the wider community working together to reflect on what is most important to us as a school community and the qualities we want to nurture in our learners. The refreshed values continue to guide our decision making, relationships, and expectations across both campuses, helping to create a strong and consistent culture where students feel a sense of belonging, pride, and responsibility.
Our strategic priorities are centred around:
• Creating inclusive learning environments where all learners can experience success.
• Strengthening wellbeing, belonging, and positive relationships across our school community.
• Providing engaging, future-focused learning opportunities that connect to the real world and our local context.
• Building strong partnerships with whānau and the wider community to support positive outcomes for learners.
Paparoa Range School was formed through the merger of the historic Stillwater, Kaiata, Blackball and Brunnerton Schools, and we continue to value the rich history and identity of our communities. We see our dual-campus structure as a strength, allowing students to experience close-knit learning environments while remaining connected as one school community.
This is a great school with fantastic opportunities for both students and staff. Our staff work hard to provide exciting, engaging, and meaningful learning opportunities for our community, while also supporting students to grow socially, emotionally, and academically.
We place a strong emphasis on high-quality teaching and learning, while recognising that success looks different for every learner. Our staff work collaboratively to provide supportive, responsive programmes that meet a diverse range of needs, including targeted support for students requiring additional learning, wellbeing, literacy, numeracy, or behavioural assistance. We are committed to inclusive practice and ensuring all students have equitable access to learning opportunities.
Learning at Paparoa Range School is grounded in authentic, hands-on experiences that connect students with their local environment, culture, and community. We value curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, and encourage students to develop independence, resilience, and confidence as learners. Digital technologies are integrated purposefully to support communication, creativity, and engagement across the curriculum.
At Paparoa Range School, we are committed to continuous improvement and to ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to succeed. We value the strong partnerships we have with our students, staff and whānau, and acknowledge the collective effort that helps make our school a supportive and vibrant place for children to learn and grow.
