Te Waipounamu, the South Island -  Our Area

The Maori name for  the South Island literally means water and greenstone,
from the presence of this stone on the South Island, the largest island of New Zealand, separated from the North Island by the Cook Strait

Otautahi, Christchurch - Our City

The Māori name for Christchurch is Otautahi, derived from a Ngāi Tahu Chief Tautahi from Koukourarata (Port Levy).
He built his settlement on the banks of the Otakaro (Avon) river in the vicinity of the Avon loop, serving as a centre for political and economic activity.
