A Fair test is an experiment where one thing (a variable) is changed to see how it affects the results. A variable is something that could be changed. In a fair test all the variables remain the same except one.
All the variables that could be changed if you were to heat water in a beaker are:
Amount of water
Size of beaker
Amount of heat
Type of flame
Variable to be changed - Size of beaker, use 100 ml and 250 ml beaker
Variables to be kept the same:
Amount of water - use 100 mls of water
amount of heat - heat the beakers for the same amount of timeĀ
Type of flame - use the blue flame on the bunsen
Variables
Independent variable is the variable that we want to change in an experiment.
Dependent variable is the variable that we measure or observe during the experiment.
All other variable are kept the same and are called the controlled variables.
Example: The height of bean plants depends on the amount of water they receive.
Independent variable (IV) - Amount of water
Dependent variable (DV) - The growth of the plant
Controlled variables (CV) - Amount of sunlight, type of bean plant, type of soil.
