Make sure you have set aside a time for administering the Student SEL Surveys. Ensure there is a make up window determined for students who are unable to take it the first time around. Ensure that technology is booked, if necessary. It is helpful to determine at the school level, the specific period or course section that the survey will be taken in.
Engage with students via sharing your goals for the work and how you're taking action on results - we encourage our partners to communicate with students:
At school, we spend a lot of time together helping you learn new skills in classes like Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. We also spend time completing quizzes and tests to make sure we have learned everything we need to know. Today, we’re going to answer some questions about a different kind of learning we do together: learning about how to reach our potential. This kind of learning is different than reading, writing, and problem-solving, but it is also very important, which is why we are answering these questions that ask us to reflect on ourselves and our school.
Unlike the quizzes and tests you normally take in school, the questions you will answer today will not test what you know or give you a grade. Your teachers will use your responses to help us learn how we can make our school a better place to learn and grow, so please be thoughtful and honest. If you need help understanding any of the words or questions, please raise your hand and I can help explain what they mean, but remember that there are no “right” or “wrong” answers today."
Feel free to make a copy of this mini-lesson for survey vocabulary to make sure students are familiar with the language ahead of time.
If possible, display this presentation that helps walk through what students can expect on their screen during the survey-taking experience.
