The speaker will explain the nature of cancer and their aetiologies. He will also explain why patients are often diagnosed only during late stages of cancer, and the treatment options available at such stages. He will also advise on the factors that would help patients decide when it would be appropriate to forgo further aggressive treatment, and opt for palliative care.

The speaker will present the fundamental principles of palliative care, as well as the various modalities available to achieve good symptom relief at the end of life. He will also elucidate the common misunderstandings about the use of opiod medications in relieving pain and breathlessness.

The speaker will be explaining the different modes of medically assisted dying, including euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, highlighting that these are illegal and medically unethical in our society. Distinction will be made between these illegal practices and palliative care, which is aimed at alleviating suffering at the end of life, without the intention of prematurely terminating life.

The speaker is a specialist in palliative care who regularly works in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), providing comfort, peace and dignity to those dying in spite of aggressive life-sustaining treatment. She will speak on the challenges taking care of these patients and their families, in a man-made setting bordering between the living and dying.

Most elderly in Singapore hope to pass away in their own home. To fulfill this wish, carers must possess the capability of facilitating a peaceful and comfortable death at home. The speaker is a senior palliative care nurse, who will speak about the conditions and competencies required to care for the dying at home.

The Buddha taught that intrinsic to human existence lies the suffering of birth, ageing, disease, death, separation from the beloved, association with the unbeloved and the five clinging aggregates. The Venerable will expound on the nature of suffering, its origin, its cessation and the path to its cessation. He will explain how one should view sickness and pain, and the methods of accruing wisdom and merits, so that one may one day be liberated from this saṃsāra.

The speaker is a senior geriatrician who will speak on the topic of advanced dementia. He will explain the aetiology, symptoms and complications of this greatly-feared chronic progressive disease amongst the elderly, as well as the common challenges faced by family carers at the end of life.

The greatest certainty in life, is death. The greatest uncertainty in life, is the time and setting where death will come. As mortals, we are deeply attached to life and dread the inadvertent arrival of death. The Venerable will speak on how one should practice spiritually, so that he may one day meet death with an open heart.

The speaker is a senior geriatrician who will be speaking on the importance of drafting advanced directives, early financial planning and legacy building before the end of life. Additionally, he will discuss how the Advanced Medical Directive (AMD), Advanced Care Planning (ACP) and the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) help protect an individual’s right to self-determination, in the event a disease threatens his mental capacity .

The speaker will be presenting on grief and bereavement as experienced by family members who have lost their loved ones from a terminal illness. In addition, she will speak on how a bereaved care giver may cope with these emotions and eventually return to a fruitful life.

The speaker is a senior medical social worker who will be expounding on the psycho-spiritual needs of the terminally ill patient, as well as the spiritual care essential to supporting a dying patient at the end of life.

The Venerable will discuss the psycho-spiritual distress faced by the terminally ill. He will also expound on the Buddhist practices that family members can engage in, to assuage spiritual distress, cultivate wisdom and fortify faith in the dying person, and in so doing facilitate a good rebirth.
