The speaker will talk about the symptoms commonly experienced by a terminally ill patient, as well as the physiologic processes that occurs when a person dies. He will also explain the medical definition of death – brain death versus cardiac death, and draw references to their applicability in the Human Organ Transplant Act.
The speaker will explain the Buddhist metaphysical understanding of human existence, as well as the intricacies of the dying process as outlined in the Buddhist Abhidhamma (The Third Collection of the Buddha’s teachings in the Pali Tipiṭaka).
The speaker will be discussing the socio-cultural factors surrounding collusion, as well as the pros and cons of revealing to the patient, his diagnosis and prognosis. The speaker will expound on the teachings of kamma and how it influences death and rebirth. In addition, he will highlight the importance of appropriate care at the end of life, with regards to its promotion of well-being in this life and the next.

The speaker will be presenting on grief and bereavement as experienced by family members who have lost their loved ones from a terminal illness. In addition, he will speak on how a bereaved care giver may cope with these emotions and eventually return to a fruitful life.
The speaker will be explaining the different modes of medically assisted dying, including euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, highlighting that these are illegal and medically unethical in our society. Distinction will be made between these illegal practices and palliative care, which is aimed at alleviating suffering at the end of life, without the intention of prematurely terminating life.
The speaker will expound on psycho-spiritual needs of the terminally ill patient, as well as the spiritual care essential to supporting a dying patient at the end of life. He will also be addressing common cultural and religious practices that family members engage in, to facilitate a good rebirth.
The speaker will be discussing the various palliative care services available to a patient who is terminally ill, these include tertiary hospital palliative units, hospices, as well as palliative home care providers.
The speaker will explain the different modes of extra-ordinary life sustaining treatment available in tertiary hospitals, as well as their indications, benefits and fallibilities. He will further discuss the principles that guide doctors, patients and family members decide on the continuation or withdrawal of these therapies in a patient suffering from advanced illnesses.

The speaker will be explaining the ethical concept of respecting patient autonomy, as well as how the Advanced Medical Directive (AMD), Advanced Care Planning (ACP) and the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) helps protect an individual’s right to self-determination. He will be discussing on their differing nature, purposes and context of application.
In Buddhism, sentient beings rise and fall in the tides of samsara. To possess the wisdom to go beyond life and death, one must penetrate the true essence of our existence. The speaker will be expounding on the Buddhist understanding of the intrinsic nature of human existence, as well as the value of life.
