This book presents Sayadaw U Janakābhivaṃsa’s teaching, compiled from several Dhamma talks, on the “40-to” contemplations—forty ways of understanding the three characteristics: ten aspects of anicca (impermanence), twenty-five of dukkha (suffering), and five of anatta (non-self). These methods are primarily drawn from the Visuddhimagga and Pa-Auk Tawya meditation manuals, supported by references from the Suttas.
Sayadaw later offered suggestions for revision, incorporating additional insights on the forty contemplations, verses and quotations from the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, and further explanations on topics such as emptiness (suññā) and self (atta).
While these teachings are traditionally intended for advanced Vipassanā practitioners, Sayadaw explains them with clarity, practical examples, and illustrative anecdotes, making the material accessible even to those who have not yet directly discerned the arising and passing away of ultimate mentality and materiality. This edition serves as a practical and inspiring guide for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of the Dhamma and cultivate insight on the path toward liberation.

This collection brings together ten anumodanā talks, edited—and in some cases expanded—by Sayadaw U Janakābhivaṃsa, from two meditation retreats organized by Pa-Auk Meditation Centre, Singapore. The talk on the Dakkhiṇāvibhaṅga Sutta is compiled from three talks delivered during a meditation retreat held in June 2019 at Nandaka Vihāra in Bukit Mertajam, Malaysia. The remaining nine talks were given at a retreat held in March 2018 at Dhammavijaya Meditation Centre in Dengkil, Malaysia.
Delivered each day before the offering of lunch dāna, these short teachings were inspired by the generosity of donors who came to offer food and requisites to Sayadaw and the meditators. Sayadaw chose themes related to dāna to benefit both donors and practitioners.
Rooted in lived practice rather than theory, these talks provide practical guidance and meaningful reflections for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding and cultivation of generosity.
