Here you can find some fun activities you can do as a class or at home with your family as you read the book.
Good readers need to be able to identify the big ideas for a novel. It is a skill that can be built upon to help them be able to write strong summaries. Sequencing is another skill that is important in reading. With these skills in mind, I created a chapter comic strip. Students will draw pictures of the big events in the chapter in the order that they happened. This allows our students to express their creativity as they work on these skills.
As part of the curriculum I designed, I created would you rather discussion topics that parents and students can use to talk about the book. This can take the pressure off of parents by providing them with an easy way to discuss literature with their child/children. I have found that "Would You Rather" books are very popular in our library collection. By providing fun ways to talk about what is happening in the book, we can ensure that are students are comprehending the story. Also, through Google Classroom, I will have instructions for our 3rd and 4th grade students to support their answers with text evidence which is a TEK that teacher have expressed as an area for growth,
Oh No! The Lock-that-doesn't-lock has allowed Humphrey to escape his cage. Look for the clues once a week to try and find where Humphrey is hiding around the school.
In the book, Mr. Brisbane designs an playground for Humphrey. Obstacle courses are good for hamsters to run, play, and explore for exercise and engagement. What would you put in a playground for our friend, Humphrey? Design an obstacle course for a hamster for a prize. Designs can be hand draw, computer generated, or even made in a shoe box. Bring your completed design to the library for a special prize.
What lesson will Humphrey Learn today? Each morning we will spin the Hamster wheel to pick a Homeroom for Humphrey to visit for the day. Take a picture and send it to Mrs. Jagielski so we all keep track of Humphry's adventures at PES!
