Teach your students how to analyze their own performance data. Do this within the first two weeks of school! Shift the question from "Teacher, did I pass?" to "Where do I need to improve?" Here's how:
Preparation:
Request your individual student performance data from your test administrator.
Let your ESOL Instructional Coach know if you need assistance with accessing your reports.
*********************************
Delivery:
Tell students: By the end of this one week lesson you will be able to analyze your assessment data; determine or identify your strengths and weaknesses; and write a summary and goals based on your findings.
Teach vocabulary: report, report title, subtitle, column, row, agency, site, content area, strength, weaknesses, analyze, determine, digit, skill, competency, item type, task, improve
Orient to the SCP on screen: Project the report to the whole class and orient the learners as follows.
Click on this image to access a practice report.
Ask students "Did you have to take a test before starting your ESOL class?" and "What is the name of the assessment?"
Point out the name at the top of the report to help students make the connection.
Explain that the report will provide feedback on their assessment.
Ask W/H questions to check understanding.
Go over each column on the SCP report and have students connect to vocabulary. Explain the column labeled "Correct?" which will be the source of primary data.
Give students their individual SCP. Connect vocabulary. Eg, CASAS
Give students the Student HO. Tell students to look at the SCP report and the student data analysis HO page 1. Connect vocabulary.
Instruct learners to go to page two and model analyzing data for the first content area.
Complete another example with the help of the students.
Check comprehension
Give students their individualized report and Instruct the students to complete the form for the reading or listening report only, to start.
Ask W/H questions to check for understanding of process.
Set timer. Work the room and monitor to guide.
Elicit sharing of findings (Example: Use post it notes to create a post-it bar chart)
Elicit ideas from students on how they can use this new information.
Instruct students to next complete the table for the remaining modality, or
Have students put post-it notes in the units of their text that address the needs.
STUDENT HANDOUT (HO)
Day 2. Explain the analysis for the task area and have students complete.
If time permits, have students complete the paragraph frame using the data from their analysis, otherwise use as day 3 or day 4 activity.
Let your ESOL support coach know if you need assistance with this lesson.
*PLEASE NOTE: This is not a one day activity. It may take up to a week, depending on your level. Please don't rush the learning experience. Also, allow learners to teach once they have mastered.
Have students complete the paragraph frame using the data from their analysis This section is important because it allows the student to set goals based on their results; allowing them to further take ownership.

STRENGTH BUILDERS
Elicit from students how they think they can use the information.
Connect the findings to the ESOL resources that can strengthen weak areas.
Plan instruction driven by the student data.
Have students add their names to the appropriate boxe(s) on pages 2 and 3 to give you a sky view of the composition of your class.
Use for grouping and targeted learner support.
The Teacher Tool
Use the Burlington English Curriculum Maps to assign students to modules based on the content area where they are the weakest, for extra practice.
