Facilitate learning groups to engage in problem-based learning to reinforce mini lesson. Students self-explore.
(20-25 minutes)
The learner groups will analyze and practice skill understanding by completing the Main Idea & Supporting Details Map without immediate assistance from the instructor after reading one of the suggested articles.
(Students are encouraged to use Cornell Notes taken during the Mini-lesson to complete this activity).
Engage with small groups to guide lines of thinking.
(20-25 minutes)
The instructor will engage the learner groups in dialogue by asking 5 timed (1 minute to answer each question) critical thinking questions derived from the Graphic organizer about each article read; new vocabulary (found through close reading) and the identified central ideas of the articles.
Work with the learner to demonstrate mastery utilizing instructor-selected tools through presentation and/or pull-outs.
(20-25 minutes)
At this stage the learner becomes the instructor by explaining the completed activity and the steps taken.
This lesson flip provides the instructor with another opportunity to listen for skill mastery and or guide learner thinking toward sound understanding.
Note: Alternative online articles can also be used as a tool to show mastery of the targeted skills presented during the mini-lesson .
Provide an opportunity for students to utilize online learning tools to facilitate individualized instruction.
