The IB Extended Essay (EE) is a crucial component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, requiring students to conduct independent research and produce a 4,000-word paper. Generative AI can significantly enhance this process by assisting in efficient information gathering, data analysis, and brainstorming, while also providing support for organizing and drafting the essay. AI tools can streamline research, inspire creative perspectives, and ensure polished final products. However, it's essential for students to use AI ethically, maintaining academic integrity and critically evaluating AI-generated content to ensure accuracy and avoid bias. Integrating AI into the EE process can lead to more insightful and cohesive essays, aligning with the program's goals of promoting high-level research and writing skills.
In March 2024, Suncoast Community High School in Riviera Beach, Florida, introduced a new approach to extended essay training for IB juniors, incorporating detailed discussions on using AI in the brainstorming and research process. The school district had recently adopted Khanmigo, Khan Academy's AI tool, and partnered with a local community college, where librarian Lisa Seymour was fast becoming an expert in generative AI. Over a two-day intensive workshop, Suncoast students used AI tools to refine their research questions and to find, analyze, and organize complex sources.
The LibGuide linked below, which was used during the PD sessions, is a comprehensive resource for training students on the extended essay in the age of AI. It provides general information about the extended essay and offers guidance on the responsible use of AI in brainstorming, research, writing, and proper citation. Students can access the site 24/7, with additional human support available by appointment. This approach, which includes EE assistance from both college and high school librarians, promotes academic integrity and demonstrates how technology combined with human interaction supports student learning.Ā

Once students have chosen a research topic and refined their research question, the next step is to find high-quality resources. AI is here to assist!Ā The AI tools in this section can simplify searches, provide visual maps of relevant sources, and summarize complex information. Some resources, like Research Rabbit, are free, while others offer limited free and paid options.
Using LLMs, perplexity is a search engine that provides AI-generated answers (much like ChatGPT) including citations which are linked above the summaries.
