3-D printed penny boat #3 design showing different levels
3-D printed penny boat #3 design
Each student designed a penny boat that we could test. The one to hold the greatest amount of pennies will be submitted for the competition. This boat design was the first we tested. It fit 81 pennies.
This was our second design. Students carefully places pennies in the boat and only got to 143 before it sank.
Our final boat design was the winner with 311 pennies fitting in the boat before taking on water!

This student explains the process of designing our penny boat including some of the challenges we faced and the solutions we came up with.
The penny boat was designed with a roll of pennies in mind. We wanted to design a boat with tubes so that we can evenly distribute the pennies to keep the boat balanced. It measures just under 100 mm x 100 mm in all dimensions. The tubes were actually designed on different levels to meet the criteria.
