June 18th

We have completed our final unit in Math for the year. The students have their final assessment on Monday on Perimeter, Area and Volume, which includes triangles, parallelograms and composite shapes.

June 11th

Student prepared for their Triangles and Parallelogram Area Quiz this week. They then started in on their final activities for the year with perimeter, area and volume of composite shapes. Our final assessment will be at the end of next week including all our our Perimeter, Area and Volume activities from the year.

Area of Triangles and Parallelograms Quiz

These will be returned next week, so make sure to ask if you have not seen it by mid-week.

June 4th

We took our understanding of area into the realm of triangles and parallelograms this week. We looked at how 2 triangles make up a square or rectangle to understand why we divide our normal area calculation by 2. Then we looked at how we could split a triangle off of a parallelogram and place it on the other side to make a rectangle to understand why we use the formula of width (or base) X height to determine the area.

Unit Conversion Quizzes have also gone home this week, so if you have not seen your child's make sure to ask them so you can sign it please.

Unit Conversion Quizzes Returned

If you have not seen your child's test make sure to ask them about it. The students will have a chance to improve their grade next week

May 27th

This week we have been looking at how to calculate perimeter, area and volume of simple shapes. We have also looked at using estimation to find approximate values for perimeter, are and volume.

Angles Quizzes have also gone home this week, so if you have not seen your child's make sure to ask them so you can sign it please.

May 20th

During online learning students have been looking at how to convert units by moving decimals. We have also looked at estimating measurements and using different units to measure various items.

April 30th

We completed out Triangle and Angle portion of our measurement unit this week. Students had a quiz on the names of angles, as well as measuring and drawing angles. Marks are on classroom and quizzes handed back today for you to sign this weekend. Next week there will be a re-quiz for students wanting to improve this mark and we will move into using our rulers for measuring and trying to convert units. Some conversion videos are already posted on classroom. We will also have our final assessment on angles but include what we have learned about triangles as well.

April 23rd

Students looked at how to use their angles to draw and name different triangles this week. We also started to learn about how the angles in triangles add up to 180 degrees and how we can use this information to calculate missing angles.

April 16th

The students spent the week looking at different angles and using protractors to draw the different angles. Next week we will tie in our angles to different types of triangles which can be identified by the interior angles present in them.

March 25

This week students designed, constructed, and tested out their Math probability games. We had a wide range of outcomes to play with; everything from dice games, to cards, to board games, to a life-sized Plinko board! Students had fun sharing their creations with their classmates and their feedback afterwards to one another was positive and insightful.

March 18

Students practiced calculating probability this week for single and multiple outcomes. They played with spinners and dice to deepen their understanding. Students have begun a probability project with the goal of developing a simple game to play with their classmates next week.

PLEASE note - Students will have a graphing and probability quiz on Monday. They should review mean, mode and median and how to calculate probabilty for more than one outcome.

March 12

Students spent the earlier part of this week polling the grade 4, 5 and 7 classes for their survey graphing projects. They are compiling this data into two graphs and analyzing the results of their polls. We also started learning about probability.

March 5

This week in Math we organized data sets into various formats (stem-leaf plots, Venn diagrams, etc.) We worked on finding averages in numbers (mode, mean, mean, range) and practiced interpreting and making pie graphs. Students were given a review package today of the various concepts we have covered in the Data Management unit.

February 26 - This week in Math we continued graphing skills in creating and analyzing survey sets. We examined how to choose the appropriate scale of data sets in line graphs and we built some line graphs and scatterplots. These are all ways of representing data visually and we will continue to build skills in this area next week as we prepare good survey questions.

HOMEWORK: Prepare a scatterplot from the handout that was provided.

Feb 12th:

Homework:

Make corrections on your unit test to give to Mrs. Prins after the week off.

Student's final assessment for numeration came back this week. Don't forget to ask your child how they did and check their google classroom for areas where they need to improve. We also finished up our transformations activities, ending with a pixel art project to test our skills at pulling and putting shapes back together using transformations, rotations and reflections.

Feb 5th

We had our final assessment for our Numeration Unit this week, looking at naming numbers, place value, rounding, fractions and decimals. We also started in on our Transformations Unit, reminding ourselves of coordinates, translations (slides), rotations (turns) and reflections (flips). Students had a video on their classroom to watch this week to solidify our concepts from class and started in on activities.

Homework:

-Watch transformations video if you have not already this past week.

January 22th

The students finished up their numeration unit this week with using integers to understand temperature. They started in on their review for the unit and had a quiz on integers to check their understanding. Look for this quiz in your child's backpack on Friday.

Homework:

-Get Integer Quiz Signed by Parents

-Prepare for Integer Re-Quiz (Monday)

-Prepare for Practice Test next week

January 15th

We headed into the realm of integers (positive and negative numbers) this week and being able to add, subtract, multiple and divide these numbers. Using rules like when two negative signs are together they create a positive sign have helped us to be able to solve these problems effectively.

Homework:

-Get Percent Quiz Signed by Parents

-Prepare for Percent Re-Quiz

January 8th

This was a week of percents. We took what we learned before break with fractions, decimals and percents and applied it to solving problems involving percent. Student looked at determining sale prices and how much they would save during a sale. They also used pie/circle graphs to interpret the number of people for each result to make decisions such as which pie should be served to a group of people based off of their survey results.

December 18th

The students look at turning fractions and decimals into percents this week. We looked at how place values of tenths and hundredths tell us what the denominator of a fraction would be. We now know that a denominator of 100 or a decimal down to the hundredths can give us a percent.

December 11th

This week was ratio week, looking at how to make ratios, simplifying them as well as finding out if they are equivalent or not.

December 4th

This week the students worked on converting fractions from mixed to improper and vici vera as well as simplifying those fractions. We also got a start on our ratios section of our numeration unit. We'll continue with these ratio activities next week.

For students at home if you have finished your ratio activities you'll have some extra time next week.

November 27th

We continued with our exploration of decimal operations with division this week, looking at how to divide decimals by whole numbers. We finished up the week working on how to convert decimals to fractions (proper, improper and mixed) and vici versa.

November 19th

The class worked on learning how to add, subtract and multiply decimals this week. Students who wanted another chance at their lowest common multiple quiz were also able to complete a re-quiz. Next week, we will continue to work with decimals starting with division.

October 30th

This week we talked about finding the lowest common factor for numbers. We found a nice shortcut for this! We also started looking at how to represent numbers in different ways, using expanded form and place value charts.

Each class we complete a set of "Mad Minutes" with multiplication. Here are some pictures of the class concentrating hard during their 2 minute time frame to complete 50 questions. Ask your child how long they are taking to complete their questions this weekend.

We did not get to our Pattern Unit Test this week, so students should look for that mid-next week.

October 23rd

Results from the students pattern quiz were handed back this week. Please make sure to ask your child for how they did! We spent most of the week doing review work and looking at how numbers can meet one another in a pattern. In the picture you can see how we work together to one another with our understanding of new concepts.

October 16th:

Students worked to revise their understanding of using variables in equations and trying to solve for equivalent equations to prepare for their Pattern Quiz that we had today. Results will be handed back and posted on classroom for you to see how your child did early next week.

October 9th:

The week was filled with variables and solving simple and complex linear equations as we moved towards determining if equations are equivalent or not. I also found that our class has a hard time showing all their work even though they have been able to solve problems. I like to remind them that in Math, explaining your thinking is just as important as knowing the answer. Koodos to the group working on our challenge questions where they're dealing with more than one set of variables.

October 2nd:

This week the students worked hard to put values into variables. We went into our textbook to find problems with words and tables to show our understanding.

September 25th:

The students finished up their review work with order of operations and had their first assessment this week. We also started in on our pattern unit, working together to tray and answer questions by using pictures, tables and expressions.

September 18th, 2020:

This week we have continued to look at long division and practice showing our work to get to answers. We also started using our BEDMAS Acronym to help us with our order of operations. Parents can you solve this problem?
