Our Mission
Trek was founded by passionate educators dedicated to exploring the historical, cultural, and natural wonders of our country. We believe students should travel to gain firsthand experience with diverse cultures, histories, and environments, fostering global awareness, empathy, and personal growth through authentic, real-world learning. By visiting our national parks, we aim to ignite curiosity, inspire a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors, and cultivate a lifelong sense of stewardship for our public lands.
Learning Opportunities
Student Trekkers will collaborate and engage in multidisciplinary learning activities before, during, and after the trip to make their Trek experience meaningful.
Before travel
In preparation for our trip, Trekkers will research one point of interest on our itinerary. For each location, there will be a historian who will investigate the histories and cultural landscapes, and a scientist who will research the geology, flora and fauna, as well as other science-related topics such as conservation efforts, and sustainability. Trekkers will be able to choose their roles based on their interests.
During travel
Each morning, we will have a breakfast roundtable where our historians and scientists will share what they learned about the places that we will be visiting that day. This will help to make the Trek experience meaningful for all of our travelers. Additionally, Explorica provides a tour guide who travels with us throughout the duration of the trip, providing background and interesting stories about each stop. Our itinerary also includes experiences where students are led by experienced guides, always ready with fun facts and tidbits that one doesn't find in a quick Google search! Lastly, we provide challenges throughout the trip that encourage students to work together, solve problems, and interact with their environment.
After travel
Once we return, Trekkers will be able to reflect on their experience by sharing their learnings with their science and social studies classes. We will also collaborate on a final product that can be shared with the PALMS community.
Purpose & Value of Trek
Hands-on Learning: Field trips provide students with a hands-on learning experience that goes beyond traditional classroom settings. Visiting national parks allows them to explore ecosystems, geological formations, and wildlife in a real-world context.
Environmental Education: National parks offer a unique opportunity for environmental education. Students can gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity, conservation, and the impact of human activities on natural habitats by observing them in their natural state.
Cultural and Historical Appreciation: Many national parks have cultural and historical significance. Field trips provide students with the chance to appreciate the cultural heritage of an area, learn about indigenous communities, and understand the historical events that shaped the landscape.
Physical Activity and Well-being: Outdoor activities in national parks promote physical activity and well-being. Students can engage in hiking, nature walks, and other recreational activities, contributing to their overall health while fostering a connection with nature.
Team Building and Social Skills: Field trips encourage teamwork and social interaction. Students often work together on various activities, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. This can contribute to the development of social skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.
Stimulating Curiosity: Experiencing the wonders of nature firsthand can stimulate curiosity and a sense of wonder. Students may develop a lifelong interest in the environment, conservation, or related fields by witnessing the beauty and complexity of natural ecosystems.
Application of Classroom Knowledge: Field trips provide a practical application of classroom knowledge. Concepts learned in science, geography, history, and other subjects can be reinforced through direct observation and interaction with the natural environment.
Inspiration for Future Careers: Exposure to national parks can inspire students to pursue careers in fields such as environmental science, ecology, conservation, or park management. It can be a catalyst for sparking interest in professions related to the preservation of natural resources.
Educational field trips to national parks offer a holistic learning experience that combines academic knowledge with real-world exploration. They play a crucial role in fostering environmental stewardship, cultural appreciation, and personal development among students.
