Our Mission

Trek was founded by passionate educators dedicated to exploring the historical, cultural, and natural wonders of our country. We believe students should travel to gain firsthand experience with diverse cultures, histories, and environments, fostering global awareness, empathy, and personal growth through authentic, real-world learning. By visiting our national parks, we aim to ignite curiosity, inspire a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors, and cultivate a lifelong sense of stewardship for our public lands.

Learning Opportunities

Student Trekkers will collaborate and engage in multidisciplinary learning activities before, during, and after the trip to make their Trek experience meaningful.

Before travel

In preparation for our trip, Trekkers will research one point of interest on our itinerary.  For each location, there will be a historian who will investigate the histories and cultural landscapes, and a scientist who will research the geology, flora and fauna, as well as other science-related topics such as conservation efforts, and sustainability.  Trekkers will be able to choose their roles based on their interests.

During travel

Each morning, we will have a breakfast roundtable where our historians and scientists will share what they learned about the places that we will be visiting that day.  This will help to make the Trek experience meaningful for all of our travelers.  Additionally, Explorica provides a tour guide who travels with us throughout the duration of the trip, providing background and interesting stories about each stop.  Our itinerary also includes experiences where students are led by experienced guides, always ready with fun facts and tidbits that one doesn't find in a quick Google search!   Lastly, we provide challenges throughout the trip that encourage students to work together, solve problems, and interact with their environment.

After travel

Once we return, Trekkers will be able to reflect on their experience by sharing their learnings with their science and social studies classes.  We will also collaborate on a final product that can be shared with the PALMS community.
