General Guidelines for all On-Site and Remote Access CPFA Music Classes
Welcome to the Center for Performing and Fine Arts Music Department!
Whether you are a seasoned veteran music student at our school or this is your first year, we are excited to bring you a comprehensive, dynamic, and inspiring pre-professional education in the art of music.
What do we mean by pre-professional?
Our goal as music educators is to offer a music program that enables our students to be life-long music-makers. Many of our advanced students taking Honors and AP level courses are awarded major scholarships to some of the top higher education institutions in the U.S., including Berklee College of Music, the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, University of the Arts, The New School, University of Michigan, and others. Some of our most successful alumni own their own record labels, are performers with major music acts, teach music at a secondary level, work as music therapists, and work in the industry as recording engineers and producers.
Even our graduates who do not choose a career in music have been given the knowledge and skills to compose, perform, record, and produce their own music. They can pursue music as an avocation by joining a community band or choir or by producing and promoting their own original music and music covers on social media, streaming music platforms, and YouTube.
Every CPFA music student develops proficiency on one or more instruments (including the voice as an instrument), learns the basics of melodic and harmonic structure, voice leading, sight singing/playing, and ear training. Many also learn the basics of digital audio workstation software, music notation software, studio recording techniques, MIDI, music editing, mixing, and mastering.
In addition to becoming well-rounded contemporary musicians, CPFA high school students have the opportunity to become involved in an exciting and engaging array of extra-curricular musical opportunities. Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter #7447 provides many services to both CPFA and our surrounding communities. We are very proud of our extra-curricular performing ensembles! CPFA Chorale placed first in their division and had the highest score out of every ensemble in attendance at Music In The Parks this past May, scoring a 96 out of 100! The CPFA Jazz Mavericks placed third in the nation in the Small Ensemble category at the third annual National Jazz Festival in April 2022. Both groups will be fully active this school year, performing throughout the Greater Philadelphia area. They will also be taking a trip from March 30 to April 2, 2023 to Williamsburg, VA to participate in the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival.
PALCS is in the midst of some important and historic changes this school year. The founding fathers of our school, CEO James Hanak, and CPFA Director Mark Allen, have handed the reins to new administrative professionals. CPFA's new Head Administrator, Dr. Steven Dziekonski (pronounced "Ja-kohn-skee") is a seasoned educational and artistic leader, and we feel very confident that the best days of CPFA are yet to come.
Thank you for choosing us as your music teachers. Please feel free to reach out to me with any concerns you have about anything related to the curricula, concerts, and activities of the Music Department. Welcome!
Thomas J. West
Music Department Chair, CPFA
This year, the CPFA Music Department will produce three full concerts and two recitals. Select Vocal and Instrumental Music classes will be combining for a single winter concert in December (this is a change from last year). In the spring, Vocal Music and Instrumental Music will have their own separate concert dates. All CPFA music concerts and the piano recital are mandatory parts of the curriculum for On-Site students in Ms. Bennett's piano classes, Mr. Harmantzis's vocal classes, Mr. Townsend's guitar classes, and Mr. West's winds and strings classes. Absence from a CPFA dress rehearsal or concert will have a significant impact on a student's report card grade for that marking period - see the Concert Participation Policy below. The Senior Recital features our graduating music students and is completely voluntary.
Remote Access students are not required to participate in our concerts and recitals. However, the vast majority of our Remote Access students do make the journey to West Chester, PA to participate. As such, the Music Department always holds the dress rehearsal for each concert at the concert location on the same afternoon as the evening concert, enabling Remote Access families to travel to West Chester in time to fully participate.
The CPFA Music Department has published the concert dates for the 2022-2023 school year on the CPFA PALCSchool Calendar and requires all on-site students and parents, as well as all participating remote access students and parents, to sign a Concert Commitment Form to indicate that they are aware of the dates and intend to participate fully.
In order to be eligible to participate in the Winter Music Concert, students must not have been absent four or more times during marking period 1, four or more times during marking period 2, or six times overall in the 1st and 2nd marking periods. Students must also participate in the Winter Concert Dress Rehearsal in its entirety unless special permission has been given in advance for extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student or parent. That permission will be based upon the amount of successful preparation the student has made on concert material and how their presence or absence will affect the performing ensemble as determined by the teacher.
In order to be eligible to participate in the Spring Instrumental and/or Vocal Music Concerts, students must not have been absent four or more times during marking period 3. Students must also participate in the Spring Concert Dress Rehearsal in its entirety unless special permission has been given in advance for extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student or parent. That permission will be based upon the amount of successful preparation the student has made on concert material and how their presence or absence will affect the performing ensemble as determined by the teacher.
In order to be eligible to participate in the Piano Recital, students must be approved for performance of their recital repertoire by Ms. Bennett.
Dress Rehearsal Conduct: Students must spend large portions of the dress rehearsal waiting for their turn to go on stage. Students who are not on stage are expected to be courteous, respectful, and non-disruptive to the students and directors on stage. We recommend bringing a book to read, a laptop for completing PALCS schoolwork, etc. Please note that neither PALCS nor our host venue are responsible for any personal electronic items that are lost, damaged, or stolen during the dress rehearsal and concert. All personal belongings will be stored in a secure location during the dress rehearsal and concert.
Meals for Dress Rehearsals: please note that for the Vocal and Instrumental Music Concerts, students will rehearse in concert attire, then will carefully eat dinner at the concert venue. Students will provide their own drinks and meals which do not require refrigeration or heating. Students are expected to behave as guests of the venue, cleaning up after themselves and refraining from touching any property owned by the venue without permission.

All CPFA classes, both On-Site and Remote Access, are one-credit electives that last a full year and fulfill electives requirements for PALCS middle school and high school transcripts.
If a student does not participate in class activities and assignments to the extent that there are not enough grades to generate a report card grade, CPFA music teachers will assign the student an "N/A" for that marking period. This typically is due to an extended medical leave of absence. A student must have a letter grade in at least two marking periods to receive credit for taking the course.
If a student has participated in class but has a major grade outstanding that lowers their report card grade by a full letter grade or more, CPFA teachers may choose to assign an "INC" (incomplete) to their report card grade. The music teacher assigning an in-progress or incomplete grade will give the student a timeline to complete the outstanding work not exceeding the first Progress Check of the following marking period.
All CPFA students must maintain a C average or better in all academic courses at PALCS. Students whose grades fall below this level may be placed on academic probation from CPFA and given a fixed amount of time to show improvement in academic performance before being asked to leave the program.
All PALCS CPFA grades use a standard letter/number grading scale out of 100%.
It is expected that all CPFA students are present and on time to every class meeting. A student should remain at home for illness, particularly if a fever and flu-like symptoms are present. For other events, such as field trips, family commitments, and so on, please notify your teacher in advance if possible.
If absent from school for illness reasons, it is assumed that you are changing your priorities to physical recovery. Home practice time for the week should be adjusted to make your recovery the top priority. If you are feeling sick but still come to class, you are still expected to practice at home.
Students can only miss 4 classes per marking period, or 6 classes overall for the school year. Students and parents will be notified when the student reaches their fifth absence. If a student is absent a sixth time, their Participation grade in the class will be lowered for the current marking period and every marking period following the sixth absence as they occur.
All music students are expected to bring a pencil and their materials for each music class with them to every meeting of the class for the entire school year.
This year, due to public health concerns, guitar students are asked to bring a personal guitar from home to use in class if possible. Guitars will be stored on the rack in the Instrumental Music Room. See Mr. Townsend for details.
All students must sign out on a bathroom log to leave the classroom to use the restroom. Trips to the restroom should be limited to once a week, and to 5 minutes each trip maximum. Students should not travel to any other part of the building without permission.
All students must fill out a nurse/guidance pass and have it signed by their teacher in order to visit the nurse or guidance counselor.
Only water is permitted in music classrooms - no food, beverages, or chewing gum allowed without permission from the classroom teacher.
All computers, musical instruments, and audio equipment owned by PALCS is provided for student use on campus or during supervised public performances only. Students may not take such equipment home without permission.
All sheet music and/or method books is/are provided to students for their use during the academic year only and must be returned at the conclusion of the school year.
All RA students are required to meet with their music teacher a minimum of four (4) times per marking period in a virtual lesson via Zoom. These virtual lessons may be one-on-one private music lessons, small group virtual lessons, or virtual rehearsals during the on-site class period for RA students intending to perform in our concerts in West Chester.
RA students are not required to participate in our on-site concerts. If a student and their family commits to participating in a concert, they are responsible for all transportation, food, and accommodations needed.
RA students are permitted to join Tri-M Music Honor Society, participate virtually in Friday Night Cafe, and participate in any Music Department field trips (in person) or guest artist visits (virtually)
RA students are permitted to visit campus periodically throughout the school year for a one-day residency. Please contact Mr. West to arrange a campus visit.
All music students are expected to give their best effort during every class, rehearsal, and performance. You auditioned to get into this program - prove to us that you love it here and want to learn every single day.
All students taking Honors and AP level music courses are expected to complete additional projects as described in each course. Honors projects are often student-selected and can include composing/arranging, conducting/rehearsing, performing solo literature, and performance juries during marking period 4.
All music students are required to digitally maintain a personal music portfolio. See the Student Portfolio section of this handbook for details.
All students should have a designated space in their home to practice their instrument or their vocal technique. All students should have a metronome or use a metronome/tuner app. The Music Department recommends the app Tonal Energy (TE) Tuner ($4.99) for all of your tuning and metronome needs. Instrumentalists should also have a wire music stand for holding sheet music and method books.
All music students are expected to practice their instrument or vocal technique to the extent needed to perform all assigned material at the highest level of excellence you are capable of. We recommend that all students practice a minimum of 30 minutes, 3 times a week, on the days that you do not have CPFA music classes. Successful repetition of the material, regardless of the length of time, is what is needed to train your body to perform the music.
All music students will be given a student account for several web-based music software programs. These programs are called Sight Reading Factory, Flat for Education, and Soundtrap. Students will be using the software throughout the school year and will occasionally have assignments to complete from home. Your login and password for any of these software programs should not be shared with another student for any reason.
Students will be recording musical performances from home as part of most of their CPFA music classes. Built-in microphones in laptops are typically not designed for quality music recording. The CPFA music staff recommends one of the following:
Purchase an audio interface and condenser microphone for professional level results. Affordable entry level personal recording equipment includes the Scarlett 2i2 USB audio interface and the MXL 990 microphone. See Mr. West or Mr. Townsend for assistance with purchasing gear.
Purchase a USB audio microphone for great results. Affordable entry level microphones include the Blue Snowball and Blue Yeti microphone.
Use earbuds with a microphone capsule that comes standard with most smart phones and mp3 players.
Use a smart phone. Students can log in to Soundtrap and Sight Reading Factory directly on their phone to submit recordings using their phone's web browser.
Concert Dress Code: For concerts, we ask students to dress in similar attire in order for the ensemble to look professional and uniform.
Tops: Solid white shirt or blouse without open shoulders, with optional accessory giving a splash of color, e.g. necktie, bowtie, scarf, but please, no hats. Accessories should not be distracting to the audience or fellow performers in any way. We ask all students to exercise restraint in their choice of jewelry.
Bottoms: Black dress pants or knee-length or longer skirt. Please no jeans, jeggings, stretch pants, or yoga pants. Black socks with black shoes for those wearing dress pants. Please no sneakers, sandals, crocs, or other casual footwear.
Recital Dress Code: For the Piano Recital and the Senior Music Recital, white and black is not required. Students should dress professionally, in the style of business casual. Students can wear collared shirts, ties, dress pants, blouses, dresses with knee-length or longer skirts, and appropriate footwear. Please, no hats, jeans, tee shirts, jeggings, stretch pants, yoga pants, sneakers, sandals, or crocs.
The CPFA Faculty and Staff has a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY for any conduct between students or between staff and students that is emotionally, psychologically, or physically harmful. This includes all forms of bullying, whether physical, psychological, or online bullying, even if you are "just kidding" or "don't really mean it." All inappropriate conduct will be treated with the utmost seriousness and decisive action.
Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to:
Taking screenshots or recording Zoom room meetings without authorization for the purposes of demeaning another person by adding derogatory phrases, or by altering the image or audio track
Impersonating another student online, in either name or profile image (or both), for any purpose
Posting or sending cruel, vicious, or threatening content to another student directly or publicly via social media
Creating web sites, profiles, or online documents that have stories, pictures, and jokes ridiculing others
Posting inflammatory comments with the intent to incite others to react emotionally to defend themselves (known as "trolling")
Any and all bullying, cyberbullying, or other inappropriate conduct reported to CPFA staff will be investigated to the fullest extent possible, and that the student or parent reporting the incident will remain anonymous. Evidence of cyberbullying and inappropriate conduct will be submitted to the CPFA Head Administrator for disciplinary action through the PALCS Student and Parent Handbook and may additionally be submitted to local law enforcement for further criminal prosecution if necessary.
CPFA students are typically very accepting and supportive of one another because CPFA faculty and staff go to great lengths to create an atmosphere in the classroom that allows students to feel safe and accepted so that learning can occur. We recognize the trust you place in our staff to maintain this safe space and make the safety and welfare of all students our top priority.
PALCS employs four full-time music educators who are not only music teachers, but are also active music performers, composers, clinicians, adjudicators, and directors outside of academic hours. Each of them makes an effort to get to know every single CPFA music student and plans instruction to meet the needs of a diverse body of ages and experience levels in all of their classes.
CPFA Music Teachers are best reached by email, Canvas Inbox inside of PALCSchool, or by phone. Click each person's name and title to view their brief biography on the PALCS public website.
CPFA teachers do not accept friend requests from current students or parents on Facebook. Click the teacher's name to read their bio on the PALCS public website.

CPFA's extra-curricular music ensembles meet directly after school twice a week and are open to any CPFA On-Site student even if they are not currently taking a music class. Our high school ensembles rehearse at the same time, but is is possible to be involved in both ensembles. All of our extra-curricular ensembles have a dedicated page for all information on the CPFA Homepage in PALCSchool.
As extra-curricular ensembles, students must commit to the entire rehearsal calendar and all scheduled performances for the school year. Directors of our ensembles reserve the right to ask students to leave the ensemble if attendance at rehearsals and events is having a negative impact on the ensemble's ability to perform at the highest levels of quality. Students will also be suspended from the ensembles if they are placed on CPFA academic probation.
Extra-curricular music ensembles follow the After School Policy found in the CPFA Student and Parent Policies and Procedures. Parents, please refer to the CPFA PALCSchool Calendar for all published rehearsal dates and end times. Our music teachers are legally responsible as guardians of your student(s) until they are remanded to your custody, so please do them the courtesy of picking up your student(s) on time.
For the 2022-2023 school year, we do not anticipate having a large enough enrollment to offer the Middle School Jazz Ensemble.
The CPFA Jazz Mavericks is a high school level jazz combo featuring high school students playing rhythm section instruments (drum set, bass, guitar, keyboard) and a "horn section" typically containing saxophones, trumpets, and trombones. We have, however, had violinists, flutists, and clarinetists as members of the horn section. In addition to the CPFA Winter and Spring Instrumental Music Concerts, Jazz Mavericks performs publicly at least once a month, twelve months of the year, and is regularly hired by real clients to play at real events, such as fundraising events, holiday parties, civic clubs, outdoor farmers markets, and others. Jazz Mavericks also participate regionally in the Cavalcade of Bands Jazz Festivals each winter and spring. Jazz Mavericks has also performed at the National Jazz Festival in Philadelphia, the New York Jazz Festival at the famed Apollo Theater, and at Festivals of Music in Virginia Beach, VA. This year, the band will be performing at the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival in Williamsburg, VA. The band is under the direction of Mr. West with Mr. Townsend serving as assistant director.
The CPFA Chorale is a high school level mixed voices choral ensemble that will be under the direction of Mr. Harmantzis beginning this year. Members must audition each semester to earn a spot in the ensemble. In addition to the CPFA Winter and Spring Vocal Music Concerts each year, Chorale goes caroling in December and typically performs at the PALCS Commencement Ceremony in June. They also participate in regional music adjudication festivals. This year, Chorale will be performing at the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival in Williamsburg, VA.
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is a program offering of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) that focuses on creating future leaders in music education and advocacy. CPFA is home to Tri-M Chapter #7447, an organization that is quickly becoming the backbone and heartbeat of our Music Department and the CPFA community as a whole. Tri-M members must be in grades 9-12 for the 2022-2023 school year, must be enrolled in at least one music class for at least one semester, maintain a 2.0 GPA in their non-music classes and a 3.0 GPA in their music classes.
The Tri-M Chapter meets for a chapter business meeting once a month during the school year on select Fridays as scheduled on the CPFA PALCSchool Calendar. Members are expected to attend every meeting, to participate on committees, and to earn service hours to the school and greater community as described in the chapter bylaws.
Among other fundraising and community efforts, Tri-M is responsible for producing CPFA's Friday Night Cafe, an open-mic style event for middle school and high school CPFA students on select Fridays throughout the school year. Tri-M maintains an information page on the CPFA Homepage in PALCSchool and this year will also be maintaining the Music Department bulletin board outside the keyboard lab.
High school students interested in joining Tri-M will receive details for membership during the first week of PALCS classes and will have an opportunity to attend a Tri-M chapter business meeting before being inducted into the society in late September. Mr. West is the Chapter Advisor - please see Mr. West or any of the current Tri-M Officers for more information.
Beginning this school year, all music students, both On-Site and Remote Access, shall maintain a digital music portfolio. This is a folder network created in your PALCS Google Drive account to keep all materials related to your music classes. Possible inclusions in your portfolio are:
audio recordings of projects
practice vlogs
projects and presentations
concert programs
Tri-M service hour projects
arrangements and compositions
recordings of music artists you admire and study
Each year, CPFA students present an end-of-year portfolio review. This has evolved over the years and is now an online Zoom interview with a Google Slides presentation. Students present material from each of their four CPFA classes, as well as any extra-curricular activities that they were involved in. This interview is also when we finalize your course selections for the upcoming school year for students who plan to return to CPFA. More information about Portfolio Reviews will be made available in the spring.
