Migratory and Freshwater Fisheries during the Rise of Early Modern Trading Companies
A tale of two powerful merchant cities-- Exeter and Lübeck.
We'll explore how the migratory and freshwater fish trade flourished in these two North Atlantic medieval trading hubs.
Archaeological fish bones recovered from medieval sites around Lübeck and Exeter will be sampled for zooarchaeological, geometric morphometric, and palaeoproteomic analysis.
Modern skeletons from commonly exploited North Atlantic fish species will be analysed via micro-computed tomography to develop 3D models and update measurement based length-regression formulas for multiple species.
High-throughput zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry (ZooMS) will be applied to medieval archaeological fish bones. Additionally, collagen peptide biomarkers for species without existing identification protocols may be developed.
