ADαPT Facility

Facility for Ancient DNA and Protein Research
at the University of British Columbia, Canada

Welcome to ADαPT, a dedicated facility for the analysis of ancient DNA and proteins, located on the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey campus and on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) people.

ADaPT serves three main purposes. First, we offer our analytical techniques to Indigenous communities and partners seeking to use biomolecular data to answer community-driven questions. Recognizing the colonial history of archaeology and particularly of archaeological science, we seek to build productive and long-lasting collaborations in which Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous questions are our primary focus.

Second, we seek to provide training and laboratory experience to individuals seeking to understand cultural belongings and ecofacts through the lens of ancient biomolecules.

Finally, we conduct high-quality research to answer a broad range of archaeological questions concerning past human-environmental interactions, including: the reconstruction of past terrestrial and marine ecosystems; long-term fishing and subsistence patterns; marine biogeography and biodiversity; traditional resource and environmental management; dietary reconstructions; and animal domestication.
