Second Grade Book Report Guidelines
Complete Sentences:
All writing must be in complete sentences.
Each sentence should: Begin with a capital letter
End with correct punctuation. Make sense to the reader
Book Titles:
The book title must be underlined with a ruler.
Even if the title is in all capital letters on the cover, it should not be written that way in the report.
Capitalize the first and last words of the title.
Short words in the middle (such as a, an, the, and, to, from, with, of) should not be capitalized unless they are the first or last word.
Paragraphs:
Each paragraph should be indented one inch.
Paragraphs must be a minimum of five sentences.
Sentences must be written in the student’s own words. Do not copy directly from the book.
Spelling and Penmanship:
All words should be spelled correctly.
Neat and legible handwriting is required.
Students must include one colored illustration that shows an event from the story.
The drawing should be neat and cover most of the page. Effort matters!
Leave enough white space at the bottom of the picture to draw one or two straight lines with a ruler.
Students should write a complete sentence on the lines that explains the picture.
Do not write over colored areas, and do not color over writing.
Submission Requirements
Both the final draft and the rough draft of the written report must be turned in together. (A rough draft of the picture is not required.10 points will be deducted if the rough draft is not edited or is missing.
Reports are due on the assigned due date.
They may be turned in early.
If your child will be absent on the due date, please ensure the report is turned in before the absence.
If a student comes to school without the report on the due date, they must bring the book to school and complete the report during Opportunity Club.
Late reports will receive a lower score.
