Mrs Fidock's news update

Our first group of children in Year 3 visited the Margate Rail Safety Centre this week. They were given a free ride on the train to get there and were then able to explore how the train network connects communities and how they ensure rail safety. We know they had a lovely day and were able to apply both their geographical and historical knowlege to their questions and learning.

Unfortunately, we continue to have high levels of sickness - thank you for your understanding while we manage the staffing around this. We are working hard to ensure limited impact on day to day learning.

Next week we have the teacher strikes on Wednesday - the only year groups affected are EYFS and Y3, all other year groups will operate as normal. Further information has been sent home, please refer to this in the first instance and then speak to the class teacher if you have any further questions.

We have exciting reading news....from next week, 3 children from each year group will bring home a Reading Suitcase - these are either; non-fiction, poetry or fiction focused - this is an opportunity for children to explore new texts and enjoy reading at home, so please look out for these.

We're looking forward to the PTA disco next week - remember to book your tickets!

Curriculum corner

Each week we want to give you ideas to enable you to support your child at home with a particular aspect of the curriculum. Our subject leaders will be sharing hints and tips to help you along the way and will be offering further ideas and resources that you might like to access at home. This week our focus is.... Music.

Music

At Paddock Wood we value the teaching of music, both in the classroom, collectively and personally. We teach Music weekly and use a resource called Charanga - an interactive site where we can explore, apriaise, perform and engage with all the elements of music education. To find out more go to: https://charanga.com/site/

We sing weekly as a key stage and learn a range of music, from hymns to musical numbers. Our choir in Year 5/6 performed at the O2 as part of the Young Voices choir and this year were the backing singers for Heather Small of M People. Kent Music come into school and work with Year 3 every week to teach them the Ukulele. We also offer a range of 1:1 lessons for guitar, piano and violin which are paid for by parents.

Bereko community partnership

Wondering what to do on the INSET day? Why not meet up with some friends, pop out for an hour for a warming bowl of soup and support the Bereko Community Project?

Bereko is a village in Tanzania, Africa, and sits on the eastern side of the Rift Valley. It has no running water and, although electricity is now available, most homes are not yet connected. People grow their own food for the year, which is becoming increasingly problematic as climate change brings crop failure and hunger.

Our Primary Academy and Mascalls Academy have had links with the schools there for many years through the Bereko Community Partnership. This year we will be running several joint learning projects with the children there as well as fundraising to help support the Bereko Garden Group, whose aim is to educate local people about modern agricultural techniques.

If you are interested in finding out more, would like to support our partner school in Tanzania, or just fancy a delicious lunch, all the details are on the flyer.
