Recipe of the Week

Bread Painting!

You will need:
- white bread
- milk
- food coloring
- cotton swabs

1) Mix 1 tablespoon milk with 1-2 drops of food coloring, use as many colors as you wish
2) Use the cotton swabs as paint brushes to decorate your bread
3) If you want, go ahead and eat it!

Tips: *yellow doesn’t show up very well

*use “dotting” motions more than “swiping” motions with your swabs

Music

Add some music to your day! I have included some pictures that may inspire you to make some musical instruments from items you can find at home. Here is the link to songs that many of you should be familiar with. Play on, my friends, play on!

Painting BIG

Here are some ideas for you to go big with your painting projects, and perhaps take them outdoors! Don’t have big paper? Consider painting on newspaper.

Art - Permanent marker and watercolor

Draw a picture using a permanent marker, then paint over it with watercolor!

Take this a step farther by taking a field trip to the front yard and use nature as inspiration.

Science - Dissolving

It’s common to dissolve sugar into coffee, but what other solids can dissolve?

Try sugar, salt, flour… what else might dissolve?

Have your child hypothesize what might dissolve, and why.

Do things dissolve better if the liquid is hot, or cold?

Leaf and Flower comparisons

Take a walk around the yard or your neighborhood, collecting leaves and flowers of various shapes, sizes and colors. Lay the specimen out and observe the differences.

  • Compare the shapes and sizes.

  • Have your young scientist put them into categories and explain why they chose to separate the collection in this way.

  • Count how many each group has. What is the most popular shape or size? Most popular color?

  • Extend this activity by drawing the specimen or graphing by specific characteristics (i.e. color, shape, size, or other specific attribute.)

Literacy - Muffin Tin letter sounds

Write a letter on a small piece of paper or bottom of muffin liner. Place this in a muffin tin and send your reader on a scavenger hunt around the house to find items that begin with the letter sound found in each section of the muffin time.
