Numercy

Here are a couple numeracy activities, one is an introduction to money and the value of coins. The second activity is a little more advanced, but also has to do with the value of money, and making change.

Coin Sort

Simply make a grid on the floor with painter’s tape and have your child sort money by denominations. You can also do this with several pieces of paper with the money value written on it: 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, $1. Try expanding on value by adding coins together. How much money do you have if you add 5¢+1¢+1¢? How much money do you have if you have if you add $1+25¢+10¢?

For this activity, go through your old grocery fliers and cut out pictures of everyday items with the price listed. Give you child a variety of money to “shop” with. Have the child figure out what configuration of coins or dollars will pay for each item. Is there a different way to pay for something if you have a different selection of coins? (50¢=two quarters or five dimes or 10 nickels or 50 pennies) What if you have too much money to pay for something ($5.00 to pay for a $3.75 item) Can you make change?

Color By Number

Follow this link for some fun color by numbers to practice number recognition and fine motor skills. Spring Coloring.

Indoor Outdoor Movement

Paper plate tennis! If you have a couple paper plates laying around, simply duct tape them to paint stirrers or rulers. Blow up a balloon and you have yourself a tennis match! Extend the activity by decorating your plates. Also, paper plates make excellent ice skates on carpeting! Simply put one plate under each foot, turn on your favorite music and shuffle your feet! No paper plates? Skate in your socks on a hard floor. Can you twirl, even skate backwards? Couples skate, anyone?

Lets Get Wild

The Oregon Zoo may be closed, but they are still busy with animal activity. I have really enjoyed watching videos of the animals having the whole zoo to explore with their human helpers. Here’s where you can tune in!

Science – Growing Food from Trash (celery)

Did you know you can regrow celery by using just the end of the stalk? Click this link – Regrow Celery to try your hand at some kitchen gardening. Some questions to consider: Why is the celery able to re-grow after it’s been cut? Can you eat the new growth? Can you plant the new growth and grow a new stalk in the garden?!?

Literacy- Earth Day tracing

Print off some tracing sheets (double sided for earth day ;-) and encourage your child to work out at the finger gym! Extend this by coloring or use for pin poke activities. We love our Planet
