Keyboard Knowledge

and

Touch Typing

Our typing curriculum is primarily administered through the Type to Learn program. Type to Learn is an online typing tutor that offers lessons, practice games, and assessments. Accounts and rosters have been set-up for all classes in Grades 2-5; teachers already should have received the required usernames and passwords. Teachers can edit their rosters and generate reports for all class activity.

Basic trackpad skills (click, double click, click-drag-drop, and scrolling), proper posture, and the layout of the keyboard are introduced in Kindergarten and reinforced in First Grade. Typetastic.com and the rest of the online games linked below are recommended to establish these foundational skills.

Once the foundation has been laid, as early as Second Grade, students can begin the formal typing curriculum in the Type to Learn program. With respect to speed goals, a general rule of thumb is that our students should be able to type 5 words per minute per grade level (i.e., 10 wpm by the end of 2nd grade, 15 wpm by the end of 3rd grade, 20 wpm by the end of 4th grade, etc.). With respect to accuracy, our goal is 60% accuracy for K-2, 85% accuracy for Grades 3-5, and 90% accuracy for grades 6-8.
