Measurement in olden days
- People use to measure length by comparing them with the length of some of their body parts like hand, arm, foot or steps.
- Hand span, foot span, cubit, stride.
- Used stones of various sizes to weigh solid objects, and pots or containers of their own choice to measure the quantity of grains or liquids.
- They were not the same for all.
- Length of an object differed from person to person depending on length of their arms.
- Stones differed in weights and the sizes of containers used were also different.
- This led to confusion & quarrels between people.
- Hence there came the need to keep measure. They developed fixed measures to find out the quantity of different things.
- Fixed measures are called units, known as standard units of measurements.
