EDD stands for Engineering Design & Development and it is an honors level course offered at Oley Valley High School as the capstone course for the STEAM program. The course throws students into the deep end of the design process as the students design and create a product from the phase of brainstorming all the way through to testing a prototype, and in some cases students take their projects even further. The course is run through the Project Lead The Way program just like many of the other programs offered as part of the STEAM program at the Oley Valley High School.
As we explained above, these are the projects that this years EDD students worked on all year long. This year the class had ten students, for the whole year, that were broken down into five groups and each group came up with a unique product. This years projects included a fitness tracking application, a way to remove pharmaceuticals with biochar, a self-sustainability calculator, a mobility walker tray attachment, and a course scheduling application. Click on any of those links to navigate to that group's page, or scroll further down this page to read a short description about each group's project.
This website is an active testament to the change that these ten EDD students went through with the closure of schools in Pennsylvania for the remainder of the 2019 - 2020 school year. As of March 13th, each of the five groups had a majority of their prototype completed and were doing some level of testing. This left just the testing and presentation portions of the project to alterations and this website is home to each group's presentation. Located on each group's page is a brief video that is meant to replicate the typical presentations that would have been completed to finish out the school year.

People are flushing Pharmaceuticals down the toilet and it is happening right now in our waterways. When people take any pharmaceutical the human body only uses about 60% of the drug and the other 40% is expelled from the body through waste. This 40% then travels into wastewater systems and rarely gets removed from the water. Having pharmaceuticals in the water could have a long term effect on the children population, pregnant women, and people that are allergic. Our goal is create solution to prove that Biochar works and should be implemented into waste water facilities. Click here to learn more about our project.
Throughout this school year, we researched, designed, coded, and tested an application meant to help families and individuals prepare for and transition to a more sustainable way of life. The process involves the user answering a variety of questions about their age, gender, home location, family size, food preferences, etc. and based on the data collected, information about the necessary amount of plants that need to be grown and what you need to do to meet the dietary recommendations of your family. The Mobility Walker Tray Attachment is a new way of attaching a tray to a walker. It was designed for a life skills student at Oley named Matt. We found out that many of our classmates had been injured by the jagged edges on his tray, and that his aides had troubles with removing it due to the difficult removal process. This led us to design a solution that would solve both of those problems. Click here to learn more about our project.
Scheduling the Lynx is an app which is designed to solve the course selection confusion problem at Oley Valley High School. Throughout the year, several revisions lead to a final project which provides students with graduation requirements and course details all in one place. Click here to learn more about my project.
