Module 2
Module 2: “Here I Am” Cultural Identity Photography and Poetry Project
As students search to define themselves, we begin to ask the question: How is our identity formed? To what extent are we defined by our heritage, geography, interests; by our membership in a particular ethnic group; by our social and economic class; by our family values or religion; by the place we live? Answers to these questions help our participants better understand themselves and others, sharing commonalities and differences.
Activity 1: Here I Am Project + Double Exposure, March 25
Here I Am project:
What does it mean to be “from” someplace? How can the place we are from influence our identities? What are the tangible and intangible ways we know who we are?
Is it possible to be from more than one place? How might our identities change depending on where we are?
Can people be from a “place” that is not an actual location, but represents a community or an idea—such as being from a family, a religious tradition or a strong interest?
