Géométrie Algébrique en Liberté, also known as GAeL, is an annual workshop organized by and for young algebraic geometers. The aim of this workshop is to gather young mathematicians in this field of research and give them an opportunity to discuss freely without having to fear that their questions or viewpoints might be silly: hence the name of the workshop.

The first 13 editions of GAeL were organized at the Centre International des Rencontres Mathématiques in Marseille (France), then GAeL became an itinerant workshop. Recently, GAeL has been in Trieste (Italy), Leuven (Belgium), Nesin Maths Village (Turkey) and Bath (UK). Last year GAeL was in Strasbourg (France).

This year the world will have seen as many GAeL's as there are lines on a cubic surface. This is of course a special occasion to any algebraic geometer and for this special occasion GAeL once again moved into the east of Europe.
