Throughout his life, Jim Ponshair used detailed line drawings and sketches to capture the form and motion of West Michigan’s bird species. His artwork included quick field sketches to finished illustrations which were often accompanied by written observations. These entries provided an immediate visual record of seasonal sightings, behavioral observations, and rare birds.
Beyond his private field journals, Jim’s drawings served a vital role in public education and regional birding literature. He organized, edited, and illustrated the Grand Rapids Audubon Club’s guide, Favorite Birding Areas, and contributed artwork to community exhibits, such as his 1993 Audubon display at the Warner Baird Library and Grand Haven City Hall. Combining artistic skill with scientific precision, his illustrations brought local avian life to focus for naturalists, researchers, and community members alike.
