Restorative Justice has been practiced in Oakland Unified School District since the 2006-2007 academic year. In 2012 after an Office of Civil Rights investigation, OUSD reached an agreement with the Department of Justice to eliminate racial disproportionality in discipline by implementing RJ. The Voluntary Resolution Plan provided the resources, energy, and focus to expand the movement across the district.
Through dedicated practice and conscientious data collection, we have found that Restorative Justice:
Reduces violence and makes our schools safer
Meets our most at-risk students with what they need
Creates conditions for teaching and learning
Supports teacher retention
Facilitates and improves attendance
Interrupts the school to prison pipeline
