Oakland Tales, Lost Secrets of The Town is the second in a series of site-specific, time-travel novels that connects young teen readers to place, puts them inside the continuum of history (theirs and ours), addresses social justice issues (present and past), and envisions a transformative blueprint of the future.
This book has a chapter where Jada and Ernesto go to Oakland CA sometime between 1966 - 1982 where the Black Panther Party takes place.

When Jada, Ernesto, and Misty Horn get to when the panther party was in motion, I noticed jada felt some type of way about when Ruthie called her sister. Jada had a BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL shirt. Ernesto had a POWER TO THE PEOPLE T-shirt. This shows that being around all of the black support has changed them to see that this stuff is really happening in the world and it is important that they and every other not just colored but all kids.
