Colleges & universities in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the purpose of primarily serving the African-American community.
Students of all races can attend an HBCU.
There are a total of 107 HBCUs. Together, they serve over 200,000 students.
Students can apply to HBCUs using the Common App (refer to the Private Colleges page).
Students may also apply using the Black Common App, a simpler version of the Common App. We recommend applying using the Black Common App if the only private colleges that you're applying to are HBCUs.
