For this adventure we headed to Dumbarton and Overtoun House. We parked on . . . . Road and found the entrance to the woodland walk that takes you up to the house. Shortly after starting the walk the path turned off to the left and down in to the Glen. We explored this area for a good while before carrying on up the clearly marked path all the way to Overtoun house. On another day we will come back and carry on further up to the Crags. Approximately 2 mile walk with good paths.
We did the yellow path up to Overtoun House.
Whilst it is in a teacher's make up to plan everything it is often the best fun and engagement that happens from the unplanned moments. Our adventure up the Overtoun Woods was exactly like this. We got distracted on discovering a tunnel that we were able to walk through without getting too wet. We then found some great trees to climb and a great slope for making a mudslide. Almost all the time we had planned for being out on the walk was finished and we had only reached about 1/2 a mile from the car! However, it was all good fun.
This is a nice activity to do on any walk. All you need to bring with you is some wool / string or thick thread. The children find a stick that is no bigger than the length of their arm. As you go on your walk collect interesting things you find on your way and tie them onto your journey stick. The general rule for picking wild flowers is to pick no more than 10%. For the children it is easiest to say you can pick 1 if you can show me another 10 of them that you are not going to pick. This is an ideal Autumn activity with so many leaves lying on the ground.
