DEALING WITH BULLYING BEHAVIOURS
All staff at Knoxland are aware of the negative effects of bullying. It is the right of all children to have a safe and secure environment in which to learn and any incidents of bullying behaviour is taken seriously and addressed.
Bullying is a mixture of behaviours and impacts; what someone does and the impact it has on others, which affects their ability to feel safe and in control. Bullying behaviour can happen face to face and online.
Our Promoting Positive Relationships Policy has a number of strategies in place:
∙ Setting an ethos which gives a clear message that any type of bullying behaviour is unacceptable
∙ Encouraging the reporting of bullying
∙ Raising awareness of bullying behaviours through the curriculum ∙ Supporting the child who is being bullied
∙ Challenging and changing bullying behaviour
∙ Communicating our positive relationships message
∙ Procedures for staff following a report of bullying behaviour
What do we do if a child feels they are being bullied?
If a child feels they are being bullied, we support them by first of all by listening to their feelings and needs and then offering a variety of options. Children who feel they are experiencing bullying behaviours will be supported by a key adult who will monitor the situation and draw up a bespoke support plan with the child. The most important part of the plan is that the child will have someone to talk to, who will support them in gaining a sense of agency. We recognise that different strategies suit different children.
Options that may be in the plan:
• Tell an adult
• Don't bottle it up
• Ignore it / Walk away /Pretend it doesn’t bother you
• Block / report users online
• Tell them to stop
• Keep a diary of what happens
• Use a witty comeback
One option we do not support is "getting them back" or "standing up to them". It is a risky strategy and is rarely effective yet often results in the victim being hurt
