National 5

The National 5 Physics course builds on knowledge gained at National 4 level and expands on this during the three units.

In order to gain National 5 qualification learners must pass a formal exam at the end of the course and complete and assignment unit and an experimental write-up. There is also the option of obtaining Unit passes for each individual unit.

There are 6 units in the National 5 course:

Dynamics and Space: This unit covers the key areas of vectors and scalars, motion graphs, acceleration and Newton's Laws.

Space: This unit covers the key areas of space exploration and cosmology.

Electricity: This unit covers the key areas of electrical circuits, ohm's Law and electronics.

Properties of Matter: This unit covers the key areas of energy transfer, heat and the gas laws.

Waves:  This unit covers key areas of waves parameters, electromagnetic spectrum and refraction.

Radiation:  This unit covers key area of nuclear radiation.

Assignment:  Learners will draw on, extend and apply the skills they have learned during the course. This will be assessed externally, requiring demonstration of the breadth of skills, knowledge and understanding acquired from across the units and how they can be applied in unfamiliar contexts and/or integrated ways.
