Higher

There are 3 units in the Higher Physics course. Learners will build on their knowledge of Nation 4/5 Physics and expand their understanding of Physics. The general aim of these Units is to develop skills of scientific inquiry, investigation, analytical thinking and independent working, along with knowledge and understanding of the discrete areas of the course

Unit 1: Our Dynamic Universe

The Unit covers the key areas of: Motion – equations and graphs, Forces, energy and power, Collisions, explosions and impulse, Gravitation, Special relativity and The Expanding Universe.

Unit 2: Electricity

The Unit covers the key areas of: Monitoring and measuring a.c., Current, potential difference, power and resistance, Electrical sources and internal resistance, Capacitors, Conductors, semiconductors and insulators and p-n junctions.

Unit 3: Particles and Waves

The Unit covers the key areas of: The standard model, Forces on charged particles, Nuclear reactions, Wave particle duality, Interference and diffraction, Refraction of light and Spectra.

Assignment Task

Pupils will also complete an assignment task which will be assessed externally. The mark they obtain will contribute to their final qualification grade, along with their mark in the final exam.
