Raising attainment in literacy is a whole school priority at Dalreoch Primary. We consider the development of literacy skills to be the responsibility of all and believe that core literacy skills should be developed across a range of meaningful contexts as children grow and develop.
In Dalreoch Primary literacy learning is planned to enable all children to develop the four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence and become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. We promote literacy through outdoor learning, the life and ethos of the school, opportunities for personal achievement and through motivating and engaging literacy experiences.
Listening and Talking
The first literacy skills acquired by children are those of listening and talking. We build upon these skills to support the development of reading and writing skills. At Dalreoch we provide opportunities for children to participate in discussions through listening and sharing ideas. We encourage pupils to create and develop arguments, opinions and viewpoints and share these with others. A range of approaches are used to ensure that vocabulary is developed and that pupils are able to talk clearly and coherently in different contexts and situations.
Reading
At Dalreoch every pupil is given a wide range of reading opportunities which meet their learning needs. Pupils have access to texts which are appropriately challenging and enjoyable. We explore a range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and play scripts to develop our skills. Reading for enjoyment is promoted throughout the school and encouraged as much as possible. Each class has a class library where children can choose books to read for enjoyment. Pupils participate in Book Week Scotland, World Book Day and Chatterbox sessions, as well as taking part in the First Minister's Reading Challenge. These events help children to make connections in their literacy learning to the wider world.
Writing
Writing is an important part of our literacy curriculum, and makes a significant contribution to the development of children as thinkers and learners. In Dalreoch Primary we use the exciting Talk for Writing approach to provide engaging opportunities to write across a range of genres, drawing upon real life experiences for inspiration. This approach builds upon children's talking and listening skills and experience of reading high quality texts, making connections between all literacy skills.
At Dalreoch we use a variety of learning and teaching approaches which aim to develop in each pupil an enquiring mind, along with the necessary attitude, skills and knowledge to succeed in mathematics and numeracy. All pupils will experience a range of activities, which are practical, investigative, enjoyable and challenging.
The skills we develop through numeracy:
a positive, confident attitude to maths
an awareness of the usefulness and relevance of maths in life
an understanding of maths through problem solving and investigation
the use of problem solving as a method of enquiry across the curriculum
the ability to discuss, explain and report maths activities
competence in the use of mental and problem solving strategies
