The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, headquartered in New Orleans, LA, recently announced the outstanding college and university chapters for 2019-20, and the SUNY -- Oswego chapter has been named part of the Platinum Circle of Excellence. “The Circle of Excellence program recognizes Phi Kappa Phi chapters that have gone above and beyond to promote academic excellence on their campuses,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. This is the second time our chapter has received such a designation as we received the Silver Circle of Excellence in 18-19. It comes with a $100 cash prize which the chapter is putting toward its student community outreach awards.

Our Student Vice President, Quinn Ceilly, attended the Phi Kappa Phi Student VP Leadership Summit in July 2019. Here is a brief description of her experience:
From July 11th to 14th, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2019 Student Vice President Leadership Summit in Charlotte, North Carolina. Over the course of the four day summit, I was able to meet and converse with undergraduate and graduate Phi Kappa Phi leaders with a wide range of disciplines from across the country, where we could openly discuss our personal academic interests, hobbies, future plans, and additional ideas regarding our respected university chapter. The National Board of Directors, who made this incredible event possible, allowed plenty of time for students to chat about their experiences and make plans amongst one another, while also holding relevant leadership talks and discussion panels with guest speakers, Phi Kappa Phi national directors and officers, and members of the national Council of Students. Throughout the summit, I connected with a number of other students, and truly enjoyed discussing my college experience and learning about their experiences and career choices. The fact that Phi Kappa Phi celebrates academic accomplishments across all disciplines makes this honor society such a privilege and profound learning experience to be a part of. We were able to listen to guest speakers discuss key features of leadership, and one crucial aspect included the “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.” Following these leadership guidelines, an aspiring leader actively works to “Model the Way,” where one understands personal values, standards, ethics, and ideals when making intelligent decisions, to “Inspire a Shared Vision” of the future utilizing a given body’s existing skills and abilities, to “Challenge the Process,” where the emerging leader chooses not to settle for mediocrity and is courageous enough to offer additional insights to better the community, to “Enable Others to Act” through mutual respect and understanding of others’ input, and to “Encourage the Heart,” where one crafts a supportive community that provides individual recognition for excellence based on personal strengths and accomplishments. Determination to live a servant leader lifestyle through knowing one’s vocation, and the consideration of how proficient servant leaders utilize a holistic understanding of their identities, actions, and available resources to empower and serve others with purpose were also discussed. Further, we considered how social media platforms could be employed to showcase personal assets and aid in the search for potential universities and career options. Additionally, PKP faculty and national board members provided insight on how Phi Kappa Phi was founded, its values and traditions, what successful projects, events, and other activities have been held in previous years, and what accomplishments were anticipated in the upcoming year. Through various all-inclusive activities, we explored and discussed ways in which experienced PKP leaders contributed to their respected university chapters, channeling their personal strengths and availability resources into action at their campuses. In small groups, brainstormed ideas we could initiate on our respected campuses, discuss which of the “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” we felt we excelled in and which we needed to grow in, and create individual action plans for upcoming semesters following discussion. Thank you to the Phi Kappa Phi board of national officers and directors for holding such an incredible and educational experience for motivated student leaders from across the country, and thank you to the SUNY Oswego chapter officers for allowing me to attend such an event. It has been a privilege to meet and share ideas with fellow undergraduate and graduate leaders from a variety of backgrounds and areas of study, who are continuing in higher education to pursue their passions. This summit provided me with such a unique chance to make countless meaningful connections, and I am immensely excited to implement the numerous leadership skills, values, and ideas I learned at this summit on the SUNY Oswego campus this upcoming semester!
