Unit Goals:
*become better close readers
*develop analytical thinking about how small parts of a story feed into larger ideas
*use evidence to support claims they make about text
*recognize how reading changes them giving them new perspectives or insights into others' experiences
Skills we will use:
- Use text evidence to analyze issues
- Explain how theme relates to the circumstances of the social issue
- Analyze how a character responds or changes as the plot moves towards resolution
- Determine how word choice affects meaning and tone
- Explain how the social issue relates to other texts or ideas
Skills we will use:
- Students will read independently for a sustained period of time.
- Students will write consistently for extended periods of time.
- Students will keep their writing pieces organized and easily accessible.
- Students will collect and explore ideas and information from their world in one place (notebook) that they can refer to at any time.
- Students will select just right books to read independently.
- Students will determine which strategies will help when reading and use a variety of different strategies.
- Students will use thinking maps to organize their ideas for writing.
