Invitational Summer Institute 2021
Building stronger writers, teachers and leaders for 21 years
The San Marcos Writing Project (SMWP) provides opportunities in professional development for K-12 teacher practitioners in all disciplines, administrators, and curriculum specialists. The SMWP is a National Writing Project site dedicated to the improvement of student learning through the effective teaching of writing in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Our aim is for fellows to come away from the Institute with a renewed sense of excitement about and commitment to teaching, writing and the teaching of writing.
This year we will continue our Invitational Summer Institute virtually, and share what we have learned over a year of distance and hybrid learning that we can incorporate into our reading and writing instruction for the upcoming year. In addition, we will discuss how to advocate for effective and equitable literacy instruction and resources with our colleagues and administrators.
One of our SMWP fellows takes a turn documenting our goings on each day. We believe that choice is a major factor in creativity, and encourage all participants to produce a log that best reflects their own style.
Each participant will demonstrate an engaging writing strategy that they have used or are developing for use in the classroom. Upon completing the ISI, SMWP fellows return to their classroom with numerous strategies to help their own students grow as writers.
Multiple guest speakers from our Writing Project community will be joining us to share their experience and professional practice. We will also have the privilege of joining several interactive webinars from educators and published authors.
