Many students think that they are not interested in reading because they haven't found that "just right" book for them - they haven't found a book about their own interests, or characters whose lives and stories are similar to their own. "Reading is Freedom/Leer es Libertad" is a program to bring more realistic books with diverse characters and stories to OHS students. These books contain topics with timely issues: racism, gender issues, immigration, educational access, and more.
However, many of the books still have themes that apply to everyone - who doesn't have friend trouble, or problems with their parents? Who doesn't like that cute guy or girl in 3rd period? That's why almost all of these books fit into the Realistic genre - because they deal with "real" issues that people face, both from these cultures and from, on this list, the Young Adult perspective.
Because they are "Realistic" novels, they may deal with some heavy, current issues. Others are just fun. As always, consider your personal values when choosing a book to read.
