Parents and guardians are a child's first and most important teacher and our goal is to support and work with families to improve student achievement and well-being. Our 2nd Annual OUSD Parent Academy & Resource Fair is designed to provide worthwhile and valuable information and resources to support our parents. Please plan on attending this free event open to all OUSD families of preschool through high school aged children.

Workshop topics:

The Advantages of Being Bilingual with Dr. Beatriz Villarreal

Learn about the 5 advantages of being bilingual: Educational, professional, cultural, financial, and psychological advantages.

Parenting the Love & Logic Way

An introduction to the Love and Logic Parenting Approach, which focuses on showing our love by setting limits and holding children accountable with logical consequences. Parents will leave with at least 2 specific strategies to help put an end to arguing, back talk, and begging.

Safe Routes to School: Improving Health + Safety One Step at a Time!

Learn how the City of Oceanside, with support for OUSD, is promoting Safe Routes to School (SRTS). SRTS programs can help support school priorities such as improving health, decreasing absenteeism, and reducing vehicle emissions around schools. This presentation will describe SRTS best practice strategies and how to build and maintain walking and biking programs in school communities.

SAT/ACT Overview

Does your student need to take the SAT to go to college? What's the difference between the SAT and ACT? Do you need to take the Essay? What's a good score? This workshop will address these topics and allow plenty of time for your specific questions about college admissions exams.

California Dashboard, SBAC, and ELPAC

California has revamped how school success is measured. It is no longer only measured by a single test score. In this session parents will explore the different measures including: Attendance, Suspensions, Academic Performance, and College and Career Readiness. We will also discuss how to retrieve and understand your scholar's state testing results.

Next Generation Science Standards

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) set the expectations for what students should know and be able to do in preparation for college, careers, and citizenship. In this workshop, learn more about how the NGSS are shaping and changing science education in OUSD.

Migrant Education: How to Help Your Child Succeed in School

Learn what your child needs to know at each grade level, how to advocate for your child, what questions to ask your child's teacher during a parent-teacher conference.

Plugged-In Parents: Keeping Kids Safe, Healthy, and Happy in the Digital Age

Even the most in-tune parents could use some extra tips for keeping up with the fast-changing media landscape. This comprehensive presentation addresses the biggest concerns parents of elementary and middle schoolers have: managing screen time, getting a cellphone, cyber bullying, social media, and more.

Tell Me About You

This is a workshop geared towards parents-students who need a space to reconnect with themselves as we talk about tips on writing their story for their generations to come through self-esteem, nutrition-self care, and communication while working on a scrap booking project.

Human Trafficking

Please join us to learn what human trafficking is, what it looks like, and how we can work together to combat human trafficking.

Gang Awareness & Prevention

Learn to recognize what signs may indicate that your son or daughter may be involved with gangs and learn about North County Lifeline's gang prevention program, Strive 4 Success.

Know Your Rights: American Friends Service Committee

Learn what your constitutional rights are and prevent racial profiling by police and immigration authorities. This workshop will provide an overview of basic constitutional rights that all individuals have regardless of immigration status.

Vaping/E-cigs and Substance Use Among Students

Vapor product use, or vaping, has surpassed cigarette use among high school students in the U.S. Knowing the risks, and how to recognize e-cigarettes/vapor products is something that parents, caregivers, and school officials need to learn. This session will cover the basics of the topic as well as other substance use issues affecting this age group.

Resilience and Restorative Practices

Resilience is a community mentoring program in Oceanside that serves Oceanside youth on juvenile probation. Resilience staff/mentors utilize their lived experiences of growing up in Oceanside and overcoming gangs, drugs, and the criminal justice system to serve youth that are facing similar challenges. Resilience will present on various root causes of why and how youth get involved in gangs, drugs, and negative behavior. The Resilience presentation will also share restorative practices on how to assist youth in overcoming these obstacles.

Parenting as a Team

Discover the underlying causes of a couple's disagreements on parenting and learn how to create peaceful resolutions. Topics include homework, chores, free time, family time, and creating routines.

The Importance of Parent Participation in Schools

Research has shown the benefits of involved parents: increased student achievement; decline in behavior problems; less absenteeism; decrease in high school dropouts; and more positive attitudes toward school. Explore ways in which you can get involved and together we can build trusting, collaborative relationships among teachers, families, and community members that will positively impact student learning and achievement.

Steps to Preventing IDENTITY THEFT

In this workshop we will discuss current issues in the news, password guidelines, how ID theft can happen, phishing, spoofing, skimmers & more. We'll also look at how stolen information is used and steps to preventing ID theft.

MiraCosta College Opportunities

This presentation will explore all the benefits of a community college and transferring to a 4-year university. Whether your goal is to go directly to a four-year school or gain some skills for the workforce, now more than ever, it is a good time to explore options. Come learn about guaranteed admission programs for the University of California and some of our hands-on certificate programs that can lead to high demand, high wage careers available in the San Diego region. With financial aid and the MiraCosta programs most programs are free and can be completed in two years or less!

Staying Connected

In this class, we will explore the many ways you can stay connected to your scholar’s school. We will cover when you may receive phone calls, emails and text notifications from schools and how to make sure we have your best contact information. We will also talk about social media and help you follow accounts, which will allow you to stay in touch with your school and the district. These will also be important feeds during emergencies. We will cover the elements of your school’s website and how to find information. Lastly, we will talk about Peachjar, our district online flyer service. Please bring any questions you may have related to communication!

Anti-Bullying in Schools & Cyber-Bullying Prevention

This presentation will cover the definition of bullying, types, and how parents and students can help prevent it. There will also be a portion specifically addressing cyber bullying: what it is, and how to help prevent it.

Connecting the Dots for Special Education

This session will cover information regarding; Referral, Assessment, Individualized Education Planning (IEP) Meeting, IEP Development, and IEP Implementation.

Palomar College Opportunities

Palomar College is a two-year community college with locations across North County. It is home to over 250 academic programs for a variety of academic goals. At this presentation, students and families will learn about various topics including academic programs, student support services, transferring, cost, financial aid, and the Palomar Promise.

Alternative and Independent Study Programs in OUSD

This workshop will provide parents information about some of the alternative and independent study programs offered in OUSD. Learn about the Virtual Home/School program, the academic recovery center, and alternative direct instruction program.
