Creative Thinking

We start each day with Creative Thinking! It is a great way to begin our learning by stretching our imaginations and thinking outside the box. There are no right or wrong answers! In fact, try and see how many different answers you can come up with. You may draw, list or even write a story. The possibilities are endless!

Here are a few to get you started!

Word Work

Spend 10-15 minutes each day working with spelling words and sight words.

Notice spelling patterns and sounds.

Sort by beginning, middle and or ending sounds. Sort by patterns, numbers of letters of type of word (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.)

Use words in sentences. Use any creative activities you like to practice reading, spelling and using these words!

Some ideas: Rainbow writing, ABC magnet tiles, Letter tiles, play doh, pipe cleaners, fun markers, typing, stamps

Snack and Stretch Break!

Writing

Please spend 20-30 minutes each day writing in a journal. This time includes thinking about the topic and talking about ideas to include.

Our three types of writing are: Opinion, Narrative and Informational. Your student has experience writing to each of these genres and feel free to change it up as you like!

Your student took home their March journal with left over paper inside. Please use it and feel free to use any other lined writing paper you have on hand. Make sure your child includes a picture!

Your child should be able to write 5-6 complete sentences. Encourage writing to be NEAT, COMPLETE and EASY to READ!

Have your student read their work out loud to you when they are done!

This can be 1-2 sentences

1 Sentence!

These can be helpful but there are many others!

2-4 Sentences

1-2 sentences

Reminders!

Self Check!

These are a few opinion writing prompts to get you started! Feel free to come up with your own!

Math

Math can be a great way to get out and about (6 feet away from each other) and see how numbers are everywhere!

Practice counting collections. Be as creative as you like! Rocks, pine cones, unmatched socks.... Count by 2, 5 and 10. Need a Challenge? Count by 25

Next, spend 15-20 minutes working in GO Math, iReady or try some of these CGI problems!

Remember to show your thinking, explain your strategy and try to write and equation to match your thinking!

Reading

Have your child choose a few books to read to themselves. The goal is 20 minutes per day.

There are many ways to spend time reading!

  1. Read the words. Pay attention to interesting words. Use stretchy snake or tap and say when you get stuck!

  2. Enjoy the pictures! Do they tell more of the story or help you understand something better?

  3. Retell the story including the beginning, middle and end. Use complete sentences and don't forget to tell your favorite part!

  4. Share your book with a partner. Take turns reading. Who can do the best voices? Who reads like a teacher?

  5. Listen to reading. There are lots of online resources if mom and dad are tired:)
