Surfside K-5th Independent Study offers an engaging learning environment that blends the best of a dynamic traditional classroom experience, independent study,  virtual & homeschool models with more flexibility than many alternative programs.

Students are allowed to work through the content with learning materials designed to fit students' needs remotely or on their own schedule. 

 In-Person Sessions

Students have the option to attend school (up to 4 days a week from 9:00-12:30) without committing to a set schedule. 

Class sessions  provide academic support, social opportunities, and allow students to work with Surfside teachers and interact with peers in a flexible, creative environment.

Students who choose to come to in-person sessions enjoy a mixture of learning activities, including Physical Education, Music Appreciation, Art, and Social-Emotional skills.

Virtual Sessions 

Students communicate with their credentialed teachers during daily virtual check-in meetings. Meetings  focus on instruction as well as a blend of interactive activities which promote social skills and creates a sense of community with their classmates.

We offer access to one-on-one Virtual Tutoring sessions, and small group options, to meet the specific needs of your learner.

Swim with the Sharks

We closely communicate with families to ensure our students have what they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Parents act as the primary learning coaches for their children, with full access to the support they need for each unique learner.

Flexibility

You do not have to choose one program. Enrolling at Surfside means you always have the option to work fully Independently, or choose to attend Virtual and/or In-Person sessions at anytime. This allows families full control and flexibility to not be tied to just one model of learning or schedule.

Curriculum

Our K-5 Independent Study curriculum uses the Board adopted curriculum used by all OUSD K-5 students. We organize work in 10 separate units and students work at their own pace with full freedom to accelerate or simply take more time, dive deeper, and/or supplement using additional materials.  All core unit & support materials are located on a central website, organized by grade level, unit, and week of instruction- easily accessible for those who travel or are always on the go.
