Day 1

Complete the following tasks prior to watching the videos and/or prior to class discussion, if possible.

  1. In a single word (it can be hyphenated), write down what you believe math is

  2. Without getting out of your seat, ask a few neighbours and write them down (no duplicates)

  3. I trust you know that 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 is equal to 3/3 or simply 1 whole
I also trust you know that 1/3 represented as a decimal is 0.333... repeated forever
Now, we know that 0.333... + 0.333... + 0.333... would be equal to 0.999... repeated forever
    Thus, it follows that 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 0.333... + 0.333... + 0.333... (same thing)
THEREFORE, 1 must = 0.999... -> Do you agree or disagree?

  4. Write a few words to justify your stance on whether 0.999... is equal to 1 or not

Math Is ...

Remember all the things that you and your classmates believe math is all about. Watch the video, what stood out?

Class discussion about math as a foundational skill. Just because you can dribble a basketball, doesn't mean you can play the game. Just because you can memorize a forumla, use your calculator, and solve for "x", doesn't mean you can play the game.
Similarly, "the computer has as much to do with computer science as the telescope does to astronomy". Can the same be said about your calulator and math !?

Math as a Language

Specifically think about using words with a concept you are already familiar with.....fractions.

Class discussion about math as a universal language no matter your country of origin. The language of place value, integers, fractions, infinity, and comparisons will be discussed along with examples and review.
