When it comes to the greatest team in school history, it truly is a toss up. The record for most wins in a single season is tied. Both the 1967 and 2023 teams are tied with 23 wins. Both of those teams had amazing players on them. The ‘67 team obviously included Alan Gissler, but it also had Calvin Kropatsch, who was a sharpshooter of his time. The ‘23 team included Isaiah Zelasney and Kale Gustafson, who just shattered the record boards that year. So who is better? I felt like I had to interview two different parties to try and decide this debate.
First I asked Charles Roborts, who was a member of the ‘67 team, who he thought was better. Charles replied, “We didn’t have a three-point shot during our time, and you guys got a lot of extra points because of that today. It’s just such a different game and the physicality has changed so much, but I think I have to go with the ‘23 team because of the ability to shoot threes. And you guys are a little bit deeper with skill.”
I also wanted to interview someone from that ‘23 team so I asked Coach Zelansey what his thoughts on it were. He replied, “I do know that the ‘67 team had Alan Gissler and he was a very good player, but last year's team was a little more athletic, and we also had a three-point line. So I'm going to go ahead and give it to us.” There really wouldn’t be a definite answer on who is the best team simply because you are comparing two totally different times of basketball. But we do know that those two teams will go down as the best in school history.
