For their Semester 1 Criterion D (applying mathematics in real-life contexts) assessment, Grade 10 students write an article about applications of trigonometry in science and technology. The articles are aimed at an audience that has studied right-angled triangle trigonometry (whether recently or in a more distant past!) but has perhaps forgotten (or were never taught) why and how these mathematical methods are used in real life. In composing these articles, students had to consider the reasons for their choices of the example numbers presented in example calculations, and think about how to explain mathematical concepts in a way that someone else could learn from.Â
