The international workshop will commemorate Anton Jansa, a teacher at the Viennese royal court, who contributed greatly to the significance of beekeeping in Slovene culture. Our school, the Anton Janša Elementary School, is proud to bear his name.
Panjske končnice tem vrednotam dajejo poseben glas skozi medij te starodavne umetnosti, medtem ko otroci, talilni lonec idej, prikazujejo svoje čiste in vesele vizije, kaj jim pomeni svet čebel in čebelarstva.
Slovenia proposed that the United Nations proclaimed 20 May, the birthday of Anton Jansa as World Bee Day. On 20 December 2017, following three years of international efforts, the UN Member States unanimously approved Slovenia’s proposal and on 20 May was proclaimed World Bee Day.The bee, which in Slovene folklore is commended for its industriousness and diligence, was given an ornate home a long time ago by local beekeepers. The beehive panels, far from only being a painted plank of wood, have a special place in our cultural heritage. The panels have proven to be an effective means of preserving works by folk artists from centuries ago, as well as capturing a unique lifestyle of the era and the values that were then held dear by local people.
The beehive is often thought to be a metaphor for good deeds, organisation, diligence and persistence. Beehive panels give these values a special voice through the medium of this ancient art, while children, the melting pot of ideas, depict their pristine and joyful visions of what the world of bees and beekeeping means to them.
We held beehive panel workshops for our nearby schools for years. It is clear now that a decade of efforts firmly connected tradition and new approaches. A blank beehive panel at the beginning was like a Pegasus without the wings. The children's creativity and devoted hardworking mentorship, as if by way of a magic spell, conjured a different type of wings for the Pegasus.
Creativity today is not bound by physical space or format and can blossom anywhere. We have committed to joining our artistic effort. Therefore we would like to invite you to contribute your part in the creation of new, more diverse beehive panels, where your culture and creativity will merge into a whole from different parts of Europe.
