Concert Choir is an introductory-level ensemble for mixed voices. No audition is required. This choir focuses on the basics of music-reading and vocal technique, and sings a wide variety of music over the course of the school year. Concert Choir has been a mainstream ensemble at SHS for many years and performs in all school concerts.
Symphonic Choir is SHS's largest ensemble. This ensemble regularly performs at a variety of events over the course of the school year, including school concerts, festivals, competitions, community events, and others. Symphonic Choir regularly tours around Oregon and out-of-state. This choir represents the best of Sandy HS, and is held to the highest expectations. Over the course of the school year this ensemble performs an extremely wide variety of music and works extensively on sightreading, aural skills and performance practice.
Symphonic Choir is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Auditions are usually held in May before the start of the next school year.
Counterpoints is an intermediate-level small ensemble. This choir is best suited for those students that have had prior experience singing or being in a choir and are interested in performing in a smaller group. This ensemble mainly focuses on vocal jazz and popular hits. Students also study vocal technique, jazz style, improvisation and jazz history.
Counterpoints is open to students in any grade, but requires pre-approval by Mr. Chase. Students are expected to take this class in combination with another ensemble, unless otherwise approved.
Pionaires is SHS's advanced-level vocal jazz ensemble. This group is a staple of the SHS choral program and performs the most out of any ensemble. In this choir students perform in school concerts, sporting events, community events, hired gigs, festivals, and others. In addition, Pionaires regularly tours out-of-state with Symphonic Choir. This ensemble focuses on jazz literature, jazz styling and technique, solo literature, improvisation, jazz history, acapella music and performance techniques. Students in this ensemble are held to high expectations and must learn music faster than any other choir. Only the most advanced singers are accepted.
