Using Online Resources and Protecting Student Privacy

Providing students a safe digital platform for learning and protecting students' personal identifiable information (PII) is required when using supplement online resources. Orting School District examines the online resources before approving the use. Guidelines for approval include:


1) The supplemental online resource must have a purposeful student learning outcome to be approved for use in the classroom.

2) The supplemental online resource must protect student data and privacy by complying with the COPPA Act.

  • Students under 13 must comply with the COPPA act by not sharing full name, email address, phone numbers, and picture.

  • If parent consent is required before using the tool, teachers must inform parents before use.

3) The supplemental online resource may not have a two-way communication chat feature that cannot be monitored and achieved.
