Inequalities on a number line
Last time in my blog I looked at some new functions on the Casio fx-83GT CW GCD & LCM. These were in the catalog button. So this means we have explored the format button and the catalog button.
Today I want to look at another new function, inequalities on a number line.
To find them you have to explore the Math Box menu. BE AWARE once the pupils open this and find the dice roll this may be something that distracts them for a while!
When I first saw the menu said Number Line I thought this would be a tool to show operations on a number line but if you look at the icon next to it a bit closer, you will see it is showing inequalities.
The function allows you to draw up to 3 lines on each diagram and can draw both single ended and double ended lines.
Follow the instructions on the cards below on your calculator and see if you can get it to draw these inequalities. Being able to represent up to 3 inequalities on one number line also allows you to compare them and look at values which would satisfy both inequalities.
Once again this could be used as a tool for pupils to use to mark their work or check an exam question answer. However, you could also think about how to use this as a teaching tool. How about putting some inequalities on the board, getting pupils to put them into the calculator and investigate the outcomes. For example, can pupils see what the difference is between x is greater than 4 and x is greater than or equal to 4.
Unfortunately this function is not available on the 991 CW so this will open the discussion once again about which calculator you would want pupils to use in the classroom.
If you want all of my calculator how to cards they can be found at the following links. The fx-83GT CW cards will continue to be updated as I find out more.
